Leonardo DiCaprio and James Cameron lead tributes to late Hollywood icon
Following the death of producer Jon Landau, several prominent figures in the film industry, including director James Cameron and actor Leonardo DiCaprio, have paid tribute.
Landau, famed for his work with Cameron on blockbusting titles including Titanic and Avatar, passed away on July 5th aged 63. The veteran film producer had been living with cancer for around a year and sadly succumbed to the illness after a valiant battle.
Though Cameron had some time to prepare for the bad news, nothing could soften the blow of losing one of his closest friends in cinema. The pair were close associates and worked together closely for over three decades through a series of record-breaking movies.
Camron is currently working on the next movie in the Avatar saga, which Landau played a pivotal role in shaping. “The Avatar family grieves the loss of our friend and leader, Jon Landau,” Cameron wrote in a statement to Variety. “His zany humour, personal magnetism, great generosity of spirit and fierce will have held the centre of our Avatar universe for almost two decades.”
Continuing, Cameron noted their close personal and professional relationship while commending Landau’s steadfast devotion to cinema. “His legacy is not just the films he produced, but the personal example he set — indomitable, caring, inclusive, tireless, insightful and utterly unique,” he added. “He produced great films, not by wielding power but by spreading warmth and the joy of making cinema. He inspired us all to be and to bring our best every day.”
Cameron poignantly concluded: “I have lost a dear friend and my closest collaborator of 31 years. A part of myself has been torn away.”
In addition to Titanic and Avatar, Cameron and Landau worked on the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring action comedy True Lies, the 2002 movie Solaris, and several other high-grossing titles.
Released in 1977, Titanic became the first movie in box office history to pass the $1billion mark. For this success, Cameron and Landau won Oscars for their co-producing efforts. On July 7th, DiCaprio, who starred in Titanic alongside Kate Winslet, paid tribute to Landau. “Jon was an incredibly kind, wise, and empathetic soul who wanted to create nothing but a positive impact on anyone or anything approached,” he said. “His legacy and leadership will live on forever. My condolences are with his entire family. Rest in peace; you will be deeply missed.”
Zoe Saldaña, famed for her role in Avatar, also remembered Landau in a post to Instagram. “Words are hard to put together right now, your passing is hitting really hard. You are leaving us too soon, my thoughts are with you and your family right now,” she wrote.
Saldaña continued: “Your wisdom and support shaped so many of us in ways we will always be grateful for. The memories we shared together will always hold a special place in my heart. Your legacy will continue to inspire us and guide us in our journey. Rest in peace, dear Jon. You will be deeply missed.”
