Listen: Leonard Cohen’s posthumous release ‘Happens to the Heart’
Earlier this year Adam Cohen, the son of the late and great Leonard Cohen, revealed that his father’s estate are planning a large posthumous release of previously unreleased material. Now, following it up, the first taste of this work has been shared as ‘Happens to the Heart’, the second single from the forthcoming new album Thanks For The Dance, has been released.
The LP will arrive next month and will comprise of rough songs and poems from Leonard Cohen’s 2016 LP You Want It Darker, to make a nine-track record that has fans reeling. Adam Cohen has enlisted Beck, Damien Rice, The National’s Bryce Dessner, and others to help along.
Having shared the first teaser of the album with ‘The Goal’, we now have the first piece of meat to sink our teeth into as the first full single release. It’s a strikingly contemplative and meditative track—a feeling that is replicated in the song’s stunning video.
Inspired by Cohen’s time spent as a Buddhist monk when he lived at California’s Mount Baldy Zen Center, director Daniel Askill said: “I wanted to make something that spoke to Leonard’s years as a zen monk,” in an interview with Rolling Stone. “This film is a quiet, symbolic narrative that charts the letting go of ego and the trappings of fame.”
Thanks For the Dance arrives on November 22nd. Watch the video for ‘Happens to the Heart’ below.
