Legss balance sunshine and angst with ease on ‘See No Evil’
It’s been a long time coming for Legss, but with the release of their debut album only a few weeks away now, each and every teaser track only makes it worth it – ‘See No Evil’ is no different.
If you haven’t got on board yet, there’s never been a better time to get to know one of London’s favourite units. For years now, the art-rock quartet have been long-established on the live circuit and as their sets became busier, they matched that step up in room size with a step up in recording quality.
It’s been heard clearer than ever since they announced Unreal, their debut record that lands on September 12th. They’ve played it all perfectly, putting in the effort, clocking in the hours and waiting patiently until the moment they felt they were ready for this high-stakes step up from EP to LP. A record isn’t something to rush, and given that it’s been five years now since the band released their first EP, they understand that too.
But now is the time, and ‘See No Evil’ proves why as the band dare to step into pop sensibilities with the confidence that they can still maintain their left-field view on things. It’s the most accessible and hooking of any of their releases, yet the intrigue remains. Standing in stark contradiction to their previous single, ‘909’, they’re filling the coin and offering something lighter and showing their range now that they’ve already shown the rage.
It’s gentler here instead. Ned Green’s vocals sound truly beautiful and richly emotional, but really, it’s Max Oliver’s guitar lines that lead the way here, reminiscent of 2010s indie in the way that seems to instantly feel familiar. They skip along the same tight rope that so many bands balanced on then, as ‘See No Evil’ feels at once both sunshining and bright while still introspective and angsty.
A contradiction? Yes. But they pull it off with the kind of ease only assurance buys – assurance that they’ve put the work in, put the hours in, and now is the time for a debut album.
