Chrvches front woman and all round heroine Lauren Mayberry was the victim of internet abuse earlier this month when she dared to wear a short skirt and wet look hair in a video! The morons of the world attacked her and she spent a while defending herself in the face of her previous statements about misogyny most noticeably on Channel 4 news a few nights ago.
“If you don’t like it, that’s fine. But there’s a difference between criticism and hatred. We’re lucky enough to have a certain audience for our band, but this happens all the time anyway, and I hate the idea that young girls who follow our band deal with stuff like that. I don’t want them to feel isolated, I don’t want them to feel like it is just happening to them, because it happens everywhere,” Mayberry said while speaking to Cathy Newman.
“Initially when we first started to become more visible, it did take a psychological toll. It’s the way the media represents you, what people say at shows… Somebody tweeted me the other day, ‘If you can’t learn to deal with this sort of shit, stick a gun in your mouth before the record even comes out. I have one and I’ll give it to you.’ Personally, that’s horrifying, if somebody put that through your door, you would go to the police with that.
“People say to us a lot, ‘How are you going to fix it?’ It’s scary in the idea of lawmakers coming in and deciding what is acceptable and what isn’t. It’s unrealistic to expect companies to do that. In my mind, there needs to be a shift in the cultural approach to women, and that will take time.”
