Ladyhawke has announced the release of her first new album in over half a decade, Time Flies, and has previewed the LP with a new single ‘Mixed Emotions’.
Ladyhawke, the moniker used by New Zealander Phillipa ‘Pip’ Brown, hasn’t released an album since 2016’s Wild Things. Brown’s usual gap between Ladyhawke releases errs on the side of four years, so the gap between Wild Things and Time Flies isn’t as egregious as it may seem.
“The song is about all the things you can feel with one person, sometimes all in a single day,” Brown explains about the new song. “Ups and downs, confusion, highs, and lows. And everything in between! Sloan had come up with a really cool bass groove which Nick and I riffed over to get the lyrics and melody.”
That would be Jono Sloan and Nick Littlemore, the song’s two other songwriters. Together, the trio conjures up a breezy, disco-adjacent groove that stuffs in plenty of wacky vocal effects and xylophones to make a truly unique arrangement. Effortlessly charming and uber-catchy, ‘Mixed Emotions’ is a welcome comeback for Ladyhawke.
Well, it’s not really a comeback. We previously got a taste of Brown’s restart of her most famous sobriquet through the Broods collaboration ‘Guilty Love’. It’s not like Brown up and quit the business either: 2019 saw her contribute to the Crooked Colours track ‘Never Dance Alone’, while 2020 found Brown featured on Pnau’s ‘River’. Pnau singer Nick Littlemore returns the favour by appearing on ‘Mixed Emotions’.
All of this is to saw that Ladyhawke is a project that Brown picks up at her own pace and discretion. Maybe it would be a little nicer to have a new Ladyhawke album ever two years instead of every four years, but that just means that it’s a welcome return every time Brown decides to return.
