Lady Gaga responds to ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ winning big at the Razzies: “Joke’s on them”

Lady Gaga used her opening monologue on Saturday Night Live to poke fun at the backlash faced by her film, Joker: Folie á Deux, which was recently honoured at the Razzies.

Joker: Folie à Deux was the most nominated movie heading into the event, which aims to celebrate the worst films of the last 12 months, with seven nods. In the end, the Todd Phillips movie won two awards, including ‘Worst Screen Combo’ for Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. It was also named ‘Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel’.

Although Gaga has forged a successful career in Hollywood thanks to performances in A Star Is Born and House of Gucci, her starring role in Joker: Folie à Deux was less well-received. Rather than hide away from the backlash, Gaga used it as a vehicle for self-deprecating comedy when she pulled double duty on the most recent episode of Saturday Night Live.

“I’m so happy to be back at SNL. The last time I hosted was in 2013. And every aspect of my performance aged amazingly,” Gaga jokingly said on March 8th’s episode, before adding, “Because there’s no need to Google ‘SNL 2013 Lady Gaga featuring R. Kelly.’ I won’t bring it up!” She performed alongside Kelly during the aforementioned episode before he was charged with child sex crimes and imprisoned.

Moving on, Gaga then addressed the reception to Joker: Folie à Deux, adding, “Anyways, I’m an actor now. And I’ve been very diligent about selecting films that can showcase my craft as a serious actor, films such as Joker 2. Apparently, people thought it was awesome.”

She continued: “Joaquin and I even got nominated for a Razzie, which is an award for the worst films of the year. We won for worst screen duo. But joke’s on them. I love winning things! And my Razzie brings me one step closer to an EGORT. It’s like an EGOT, but it’s hurtful.”

Previously, while speaking to Elle in January, Gaga sincerely said of the backlash that Joker: Folie à Deux faced from audiences, stating, “People just sometimes don’t like some things. It’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.”

Meanwhile, Gaga recently released her new album, Mayhem, on March 7th. On Saturday Night Live, in addition to hosting the legendary sketch show, she also took to the stage to perform ‘Abracadabra’ and ‘Killah’.
