Kylie Minogue beats Wham to secure UK’s Christmas number one single

Kylie Minogue has secured the Christmas number one in the UK for the first time in her career.

The Australian pop star has topped the charts with her new Christmas song, ‘Xmas’, which was released on December 13th as an Amazon Music Exclusive.

In total, ‘Xmas’ secured 55,926 units to land in top spot, which was made up of 14.1 per cent in physical formats, 18.4 per cent in downloads and the remaining 67.5 per cent came from streaming services. Minogue shifted more than 9,000 units more than Wham’s ‘Last Christmas‘, which finished second with 46,616.

Minogue asserting herself at the top of the festive charts makes for a welcomed change after Wham spent two years at number one, and novelty duo LadBaby, astonishingly, previously had five successive Christmas number ones.

In a statement, Minogue told the Official Charts, “It’s hard to put into words how special this feels. Being Christmas Number 1 really is the most wonderful gift! I’m so thankful to everyone who’s been listening and sharing the love and I’m wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!”

Additionally, she also said while live on BBC Radio 1, “This is just incredible. I want to thank everyone who has got behind this song. It has blown my mind.”

In the festive spirit, Minogue added, “All I can say is thank you. I wish everyone the merriest of Christmasses.”

This latest number one has also given Minogue a new chart record. She has become the first female artist to boast number one UK singles across four different decades, topping the charts in the 1980s, ’90s, ’00s, and ’20s.

Elsewhere in the UK singles chart, Mariah Carey came third with ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’, and Brenda Lee landed in fourth with ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’.

Poignantly, the Together for Palestine collective, led by Brian Eno, managed to secure fifth with ‘Lullaby’. The song is supporting three Palestinian-led organisations: Taawon, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund and Palestine Medical Relief Service.
