King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard announce behind-the-scenes documentary
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard continue to prove themselves as one of the most hard-working bands in the world. Earlier in July, they announced they would be releasing their 26th studio album entitled Flight b741. Today, to whet the appetites of fans and give insight into what the new project will be like, they have released the latest single ‘Hog Calling Contest’ and announced details of a mini-documentary, Oink Oink Flight b741: The Making of…
The documentary has seemingly been an interesting challenge for director Guy Tyzack as it was shot in 16mm film, which restricted his filming to roughly five minutes daily. This meant Tyzack had to observe the band’s creative process and recognise when the moment was right.
“We were tasked with capturing the band make an album from scratch in two weeks, they purposefully didn’t prepare much for the recordings so it was very difficult for me to plan what to film,” said Tyzack, “I just knew they’d be in one room and three of them might drop out at any moment because they were expecting babies. The room looked brown and boring so I painted it like the sky to match the theme of the album in one 17 hour stretch with three friends and a slab of mids.”
Fans will likely become more familiar with the band’s creative process due to the documentary as it will give viewers an insight look at their writing process. It will give their army of followers an exciting glimpse into one of the most prolific and unique musical outfits in modern music.
The newest single, ‘Hog Calling Contest’, is a chaotic track filled with upbeat bass runs, guitar runs and tranquil harmonies in the background. It sets the foundation for what will likely be a versatile album that explores a range of different styles of music.
“While recording Flight b741, we occasionally had these ultra inspired tune-up/warm-up jams. Of course, we were never actually recording during these moments though. Lost to time,” said the band, discussing their inspiration for the track.
They continued: “Except one time; this time. We learnt to record these moments; ‘Daily Blues’ came together this way too. But ‘Hog Calling Contest’ retains a unique unhinged-ness that only comes when you’re fooling around with your mates and don’t think you are being recorded. Happy in mud!”
