Kid Rock defends Turning Point USA’s Super Bowl show
Kid Rock has defended his decision to headline the alternate Super Bowl halftime show, explaining that it is in honour of the “big portion” of America that are “underserved entertainment-wise.”
Turning Point USA, founded by the late Charlie Kirk, recently announced its plans for an alternative Super Bowl halftime show, with Kid Rock, alongside other performers Brantley Gilbert, Gabby Barrett, and Lee Brice, to perform at the same time as the official Super Bowl performance.
This is in response to the NFL’s chosen headliner, Bad Bunny, who will be delivering the entire performance in Spanish. Those in the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, will also be entertained before the game by rock legends Green Day, who recently used their Super Bowl pre-party performance to give a defiant message to ICE agents.
Appearing in an interview on the American news channel show, Fox and Friends, on February 6th, Kid Rock defended the so-called ‘All-American Halftime Show. He clarified, “I think I speak for Turning Point and all the artists involved, that none of us are approaching this with any hate in our hearts at all. It’s just a love for our base and love for music, our country.”
The vocal Trump supporter explained, “There’s a big portion of this country, like it or not, that’s underserved entertainment-wise.”
These “underserved” Americans are at the heart of their show: “We’re just [going to] go play for our base. You know, people who love America, love football, love Jesus.”
He continued, “It’s pretty much that simple. And, of course, the media and the haters are going to try to detract from it.”
Kid Rock was also asked to respond to the fact that the NFL had picked “polarising” acts, and he appeared to throw shade at Bad Bunny in his response, in which he admitted the organisation had picked a more local act.
“If the NFL really was all about its stated goals and really wanted to take care of their fanbase […] why not take two things that are right from their cities? Really celebrate the culture of any city they are in,” he shrugged, suggesting metal icons Metallica as a better alternative as they come from the area.
Recently, it was announced that the stop in South Carolina on Kid Rock’s MAGA-friendly touring festivalm Rock the Country, was cancelled after a slew of artists dropped out.
