Kevin Costner reveals “real” cost of self-financing ‘Horizon: An American Saga’
Kevin Costner, who recently premiered the first instalment of the four-part Horizon: An American Saga at Cannes Film Festival, has now revealed the “real” financial cost of making the movie.
While the first two movies are set to arrive this summer through Warner Bros after they agreed a distribution deal, Costner is yet to full-finance the final two films in the series. Nevertheless, the third segment is still in the pre-production phase, and Costner is determined to find a way to ensure it’s completed.
At Cannes Film Festival, Costner was visibly emotional after the three-hour epic was shown to audiences for the first time after dedicating years of his life to realising his ambition to create the western.
He told those in France: “I’m sorry you had to clap that long for me to understand that I should speak. Such good people. Such a good moment, not just for me, but for the actors that came with me, for people who believed in me who continued to work. It’s a funny business, and I’m so glad I found it. In addition to starring Costner, Horizon: An American Saga also features Sienna Miller, Giovanni Ribisi, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Jamie Campbell Bower, Danny Huston, Abbey Lee, Michael Angarano and Luke Wilson.
Previously, it was reported that Costner had re-mortgaged his ranch to finance the project, allowing him to inject $20 million into Horizon along with the assistance of two anonymous investors. However, he’s now revealed the figure is much greater than previously reported.
Speaking to GQ as part of their new cover story, the Dancing with Wolves star divulged: “I know they say I’ve got $20 million of my own money in this movie. It’s not true. I’ve got now about $38 million in the film. That’s the truth. That’s the real number.”
Costner also said of the final two films in the series, noting, “They’re going to happen regardless, but they’re not already funded. I got my suitcase on the end of the street, you know, and seeing: Where are all you brave, rich billionaires? If I hear the word billionaire one more time, I think I’m going to puke.”
Specifying precisely what he desires from an investor, Costner explained: “I need somebody that’s impulsive, is emotional, has money, and wants to go west. And it’s like: Now let’s see how much of a ga
The first instalment of Horizon: An American Saga is set for release on June 28th, with the successor arriving on August 16th. If the warm reception at Cannes is any indicator of how the movies will fare at the box office, Costner will have no worries financing the final two movies, and his bold gamble will have paid off emphatically, however, nothing is certain in Hollywood.
