Kelly Preston, actor and wife of John Travolta, dies aged 57
Kelly Preston, the actor who has starred in films such as Jerry Maguire, For Love Of The Game, Sky High, has died at the age of 57.
Preston, who has been married to John Travolta for 29 years, passed away after a two-year battle with breast cancer. “It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer,” Travolta wrote in a statement.
“She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many. …I will be taking some time to be there for my children who have lost their mother, so forgive me in advance if you don’t hear from us for a while. All my love, JT.”
Her daughter, Ella, also took to social media to share a tribute, writing: “I have never met anyone as courageous, strong, beautiful and loving as you. Anyone who is lucky enough to have known you or to have ever been in your presence will agree that you have a glow and a light that never ceases to shine and that makes anyone around you feel instantly happy.
“Thank you for being there for me no matter what. Thank you for your love. Thank you for your help and thank you for making this world a better place. You have made life so beautiful and I know you will continue to do so always. I love you so much mama.”
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Preston spent periods of her childhood living in Iraq and Australia before going on to solidify her dreams of being an actor when studying drama and theatre at the University of Southern California. At the age of 16, the budding performer was spotted by a fashion photographer who offered her the chance to work in commercials and eventually arranged her first feature film audition for the role of Emmeline in the 1980 picture The Blue Lagoon.
It wouldn’t be until the mid-1980s when Preston would enjoy her success, starring in films such as Mischief, Secret Admirer, SpaceCamp, Spellbinder and more. One of Preston’s more celebrated performances came in 1988 effort Twins which also starred the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito.
Preston, who also appeared in multiple popular television shows, would go on to meet John Travolta on the set of the 1987 film The Experts and kickstart are whirlwind romance. After four years dating, and explaining in interviews how she had a premonition that she would marry the actor when she first saw the film poster for Grease, the couple tied the not in a romantic event in Paris in 1991.
The actor continued working up until her battle with breast cancer began, last appearing in 2018 biographical crime film Gotti in which Travolta took the lead.
Preston is survived by her husband and two children. Her son Jett died in 2009.
