Keanu Reeves confirms ‘Constantine’ sequel is in early script-writing stages
Keanu Reeves recently updated the new instalment of the Constantine story, saying a follow-up story is already ready and the greenlight has been given to begin work on the script.
The actor starred in the Francis Lawrence-helmed 2005 fantasy as the titular demonologist, with many since speculating about when there will be a sequel and what the storyline will be.
Now, the actor claimed that he and Lawrence had been working on making the follow-up happen for years and are finally moving in the right direction.
“We’ve been trying to make this film for over a decade,” he told Inverse, continuing, “and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘OK.’ So, we’re going to try and write a script.”
While he kept his cards close to his chest regarding potential plots or characters, he said it would be set in the same world as the first movie and teased an even more troubled titular character than the first run: “We’re not going off that,” he admitted, adding, “John Constantine’s going to be tortured even more.”
Francis also recently suggested the sequel was quickly coming together, telling Collider that it was “closer than ever” and that he and Reeves are excited to finally get moving. “We have a great idea,” he said, “We have gone through a bunch of the comics over the years and looked at things.”
He continued: “I will say that there’s probably grains from things that we’re pulling, but in truth, most of it is just coming from the three of us, you know, loving the character, loving the world, having it sort of in the back of our minds for 20 years and just kind of percolating on ideas, and stories and characters we love, and ideas we love.”
While the idea has been in the works for a long while, he also said that they only started moving forward with the project in 2020, each party deciding that it felt right to up the age rating and dive into a world and story that didn’t hold back. “We’re like, ‘fuck it,'” Francis said, “Let’s go and do a sequel and really make an R-rated movie.”
