Katy Kirby releases brand new single ‘Party of the Century’
In the build up to the release of her second album ‘Blue Raspberry’ which is out in January 2024, Katy Kirby has today released the brand new single ‘Party of the Century’ a spell-binding and relaxing track that sets the new album up as a thing of beauty.
The instrumentation on this song almost glistens. The plucking of guitars sounds like ripples in water as they come and go quickly, Kirby’s voice floating on top of them throughout. It’s easy to get lost in. A song which is layered, but not so much so that it becomes overwhelming.
“I wrote ‘Party of the Century’ on FaceTime with my friend Christian Lee Hutson,” said Katy, “just kinda haphazardly sending lyrics we’d saved in our respective notes.” It doesn’t come as a surprise that the song was written in a casual setting as it has quite a casual feel to it, not in the sense that it doesn’t feel like effort has gone into its creation, but more a warm sense of familiarity.
“It turned into a sort of slow-danceable, semi-sweet love song about seeking connection when it feels like the chaos is probably never going to stop,” she continued, “it’s kind of also about physics and anti-natalism, and climate change, and also how much we love our friends.”
That theme of friendship is ever-present, too, with clips of her friends talking in both her music and the video which accompanies the song. ‘Party of the Century’ will no doubt leave fans eagerly awaiting the new album as it’s instantly accessible and incredibly moreish.
Katy will also be going on a tour around the US with her new album so that fans will have the chance to see their new favourite songs live. The tour will see her visit cities such as Jackson, Salt lake City, New York, Chicago and more.
