Kate Winslet confirmed as lead for ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’

Kate Winslet has been confirmed as the female lead in the upcoming fantasy movie, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

Beyond the fact that the English actor will play the primary female role in the upcoming adventure movie, the specifics of the character are tightly kept under wraps.

The Oscar winner will join the returning Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, and Andy Serkis as Gollum, roles they first brought to life in 2001’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Serkis will also direct.

The new film will follow Aragorn’s quest to capture Gollum before the iconic creature has time to reveal the Ring’s location to Sauron. The plot was heavily extrapolated from footnotes in the original texts by J. R. R. Tolkien.

As confirmed by Deadline, Winslet will film for the project from May through to October in New Zealand. To do this, Winslet will uproot her family from West Sussex, who will join her in the country.

Noting his excitement for the new instalment, Wood has already shared that he sees the film as “a creative ‘getting the band back together.’ A lot of the creative heads of department are back and in that space again.”

Woods also gushed that Phillipa Boyens, who wrote the screenplay for the original Lord of the Rings series, “is co-writing it and producing it”.

Though Winslet’s lips are currently sealed, Wood has posited the project as “That core original group getting back together to tell this story that will feel like a really fun exploration of this character that we all love so much.”

When The Hunt for Gollum was confirmed in 2024, Warner Bros also stated that another Lord of the Rings film would follow afterwards. It is currently unclear whether Winslet will stay on with the expanding universe.
