Kasey Musgraves announces new album ‘Deeper Well’

Country singer Kasey Musgraves has announced her sixth studio album, Deeper Well. The LP is set to arrive on March 15th and the announcement is accompanied by the release of lead single, ‘Deeper Well’.

The record is set to differ sonically from her last full-length studio offering, 2021’s Star-Crossed, which saw Musgraves venture further into pop with synths and psych influences. Now, she craves a return to “softer songs,” as she told Zane Lowe on Apple Music.

“I didn’t even know what I wanted to do, but I knew that I wanted to get back to that organic wooden instrument place and just no punches pulled,” she explained. Musgraves also borrowed inspiration from New York, where she recorded the album.

Explaining her walk to the studio as marked by the sounds of reggae and the smell of pizza, she described the city as “on 10.” “When the outer canvas is so maximalistic, I think it’s easier to go to a minimalistic place in your mind,” she explained to Lowe.

The album’s first single, which borrows shares its title with the album, already demonstrates a return to quieter, more minimalist soundscapes. Over soft strums and subdued percussion, Musgraves sings of peace and self-care. “I’ve got to take care of myself,” she sings, “I found a deeper well.”

The new single is accompanied by a music video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis. The camera follows Musgraves alongside the ocean, as rocks and a glowing orb float alongside her.

The album will be available streaming as well as on transparent cream vinyl, a hand-drawn picture disc, CD and cassette. Deeper Well is set for release on March 15th.
