Karla Sofía Gascón is worried she’ll be banned from working in US due to being transgender: “It will be very difficult”
Karla Sofía Gascón has said she is worried about returning to work in the US due to the fact she is transgender, noting that “it will be very difficult.”
Gascón appeared on the red carpet of the Platino Awards on April 27th, the awards show recognising Ibero-American film and TV, when she told The Hollywood Reporter that she feels transgender people are “losing their freedom.”
When asked about returning to the US, the actor said: “I’m looking forward to it. The question is whether when I get to the United States everything will be OK.”
She added: “But if they don’t let me in or they don’t let me work because they consider that I am not a sufficiently qualified person or they want to discriminate against me because of my sexuality, then it will be very difficult.”
Gascón continued: “I’m looking forward to doing millions of things in the United States because I think it’s a wonderful country full of something that we have all wished for in this world, which is freedom, and we are losing it. We are losing it.”
The actor’s latest comments come in the aftermath of a disastrous Oscars campaign earlier this year, in which Gascón became the first transgender woman to be nominate for the ‘Best Actress’ award for her leading role in Emilia Pérez, before the film’s chances were blighted by racist social media posts she made years prior began to resurface.
At the time, Gascón apologised for the incident, saying, “I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain.” However, this scandal severely stunted the movie’s award opportunities, with only Zoe Saldaña walking away with the Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actress’.
