Josh Brolin has “trepidation” over possible ‘The Goonies’ sequel

Josh Brolin has admitted that he feels “trepidation” over the thought of doing a sequel for The Goonies, four decades after the classic film first hit the big screen.

The actor was speaking in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of his latest movie Weapons, when he was asked about the potential for a sequel 40 years on.

He said: “I hope it does [happen] because the experience was so great. The movie is received so well, generation after generation. It’s just everything good about it,” before conceding, “The trepidation that I have is that you release something else that taints that. I don’t want to taint what my memory of it [is].”

Explaining that the idea of a sequel has been flaunted many times in the past, Brolin noted, “If Spielberg approves it, you know it’s going to be good,” before revealing, “I think there’s been five scripts so far through the years and he hasn’t approved anything yet.”

Since the original film depicts a group of teenagers embarking on an adventure to save their homes and subsequently unveil the fortune of the pirate One-Eyed Willy, Brolin joked about what the plot of the sequel could centre on, now that the cast are all middle-aged.

“It’s like, ‘Oh, we came out with another,’ and then the Goonies grew up,” he said, “and then they came out with their walkers and then they fell off a cliff because they couldn’t see very well. What are you going to do? I don’t know.”

For the part of his latest film Weapons, Brolin stars opposite Julia Garner in the horror mystery directed by Zach Cregger, where a group of 17 children suddenly go missing after running towards an unknown target. It is set to be released in the US on August 8th, 2025.
