Johnny Marr blasts use of The Smiths song at Donald Trump rally

Johnny Marr has taken to Twitter to protest the use of The Smiths‘ ‘Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want’ at a Donald Trump rally.

The band’s former guitarist learned that the song had been used before Trump’s appearance at a rally in Laconia, New Hampshire when journalists started sharing clips on Twitter.

Reporter Soo Rin Kim also shared a clip of the song being used a year ago at a rally in South Dakota, which Marr replied to. “Ahh…right…OK,” he wrote. “I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this shit shut right down right now.”

Marr now joins a long list of musicians horrified that their material is being used before Trump rallies. Ozzy Osbourne, Queen, Neil Young, and Guns N’ Roses, to name only a few, have all been vocally against the use of their music by the Trump campaign.

Trump’s team found legal loopholes to ensure the rallies could freely use their music, and it’s not yet known if Marr will succeed in getting it stopped.

Many fans online poked fun at the combination of Trump and The Smiths, given Morrissey’s often controversial political opinions. However, the frontman has not come out in support of Trump or his politics.

Morrissey has previously called the former President a “terrible, terrible scourge” and offered, “for the safety of the human race”, to push a button that would kill him.
