Johnny Lloyd releases new track ‘Pilgrims’

Following Tribes’ disbandment in late 2013, after rumours of Lloyd’s intent to break away in pursuit of a solo career, the surfacing of the Pilgrims EP a few weeks back confirmed the former Tribes man’s lustful desire to go it alone, exposing a pared-back sound far from the brash Americana of Tribes’ final album, ‘Wish to Scream’.

Reportedly mixed by Mystery Jet’s own Blaine Harrison, the eponymous ‘Pilgrims’ is the standout track, laced with synths. In it, the former Tribes frontman flirts with a distinct 1980s influence, channelling a Blood Orange-reminiscent funk while still upholding the signature lyricism of his former work.

“It’s late, and I know I’ve never loved somebody like you”, immediately suggestive of the tone of Tribes’ first album and the romantic melancholy of ‘Halfway Home’.

Hauntingly summery, it evokes future nostalgia in a progressive break away from a band whose glory days owed much to the tearaway Lloyd.

Having already performed at the Dot to Dot festival and recently finished his stint supporting The Kooks around Europe, Lloyd has been playing his cards close to his chest.

Regardless, ‘Pilgrims’ is an exemplary, shining summer soundtrack that rightfully deserves a download. Well, wouldn’t it be rude not to?
