John Mayer shares poignant tribute to Bob Weir: “Thanks for letting me ride alongside you”

John Mayer has paid a poignant tribute to his Dead and Company bandmate Bob Weir, writing on social media, “Thanks for letting me ride alongside you.”

The Grateful Dead guitarist passed away aged 78 on January 10th, due to underlying lung issues after he previously beat cancer in 2025, his family confirmed in a statement.

Subsequently, tributes have been flooding in from across the music industry for the iconic rocker, with Mayer taking to social media on January 12th to also share his condolences.

“Okay Bob. I’ll do it your way,” he wrote. “Fkn’ A… Thanks for letting me ride alongside you. It sure was a pleasure. If you say it’s not the end, then I’ll believe you. I’ll meet you in the music. Come find me anytime.”

Mayer had struck up a close friendship with Weir over the past few years, after performing alongside him in the spin-off band Dead and Company.

The pair had been working together for a decade, with them first joining forces in 2015, with a studio performance first taking place in February that year while Mayer was guest hosting The Late Late Show.

Over the years that ensued, Mayer joined the ranks of Weir and his bandmates, and they toured together multiple times under the Dead and Company moniker.

Weir remained an active member of the band right up until near the end of his life, completing residencies at The Sphere in Las Vegas throughout 2024 and 2025.

His last performances honoured The Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary with a series of special shows at the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, which he appeared at after being diagnosed with cancer, it later emerged.

A number of other emotional tributes have been paid to Weir over the weekend, with Sammy Hagar sharing that the pair had struck a deal that they were supposed to live until 100 together.
