John Lurie shares three songs from forthcoming album

John Lurie has shared three new songs ahead of the release of Painting With John, the soundtrack for his HBO series of the same name.

‘Wah Wah’, ‘Old Man Dancing’, and ‘Ali Hum’ provide a first glimpse at the release. The former is an instrumental piece with ascending keys and gorgeous strings, while the latter two make space for Lurie’s vocals.

‘Old Man Dancing’ is a playful track dominated by horns that finds Lurie declaring, “Dance like nobody’s watching, even if you have a show on HBO”. Meanwhile, ‘Ali Hum’ is slightly more contemplative, marked by gorgeous strings and layered vocals.

Following from the success of Fishing with John, Painting with John first aired in 2021. The show follows Lurie’s contemplations on life as he paints. It was renewed for two more seasons before it was cancelled. The last instalment, which arrived in 2023, included a feature from Flea.

Now, Lurie unveils the music that accompanied his painting sessions. The album features 56 tracks which span new material created for the series, as well as classic recordings from throughout Lurie’s career.

Lurie suffers from chronic Lyme disease, an issue he thought might have limited his creations for Painting with John. “After the illness, started, I didn’t think I’d ever be able to do this again,” he shared, “This may be the last thing I do, I want it to be beautiful.”

Painting With John is set for release on March 15th via Strange & Beautiful Music. ‘Old Man Dancing’, ‘Ali Hum’, and ‘Wah Wah’ are out now, listen below.
