A new James Bond feels further away than ever as the current release No Time To Die suffers from COVID-19 delays again and again. But with the knowledge that this will be the last one in which Daniel Craig will take on the iconic role of 007, the thoughts of who will be the next James Bond continue to swirl. The latest actor to throw his hat in the ring is John Boyega.
The Star Wars actor has been routinely touted as a potential to take on the role, largely resonating from the word of his Small Axe co-star Letitia Wright. She was asked with Boyega or her Black Panther co-star Daniel Kaluuya would make a better Bond and replied: “I say Boyega because I know he would love it, you know?”
She added: “Daniel is the ‘do the work and stay behind.’ You know, he likes to stay low key. So that’s too much. He can still play Bond, too. But I know John Boyega would just, yeah.” It was enough to set Bond’s loyal fanbase into an extra state of excitement. Boyega suggested that he would be interested in the role but only if his Small Axe director, Steve McQueen, took the reins of the production.
“Ooh! Hey listen, Steve McQueen directing, let’s do this!” he responded when told of Wright’s suggestion. Boyega also suggested that with him and McQueen in prominent roles, the franchise could be given a needed boost: “We could show them something different. We still bring that sophistication. You know, James Bond has to be James Bond. But we could do something with that.”
No Time To Die won’t arrive until spring of 2021, so the chances of finding out who the next James Bond will be after that are likely to below until his final movie is released. However, if the team managed to secure John Boyega and Steve McQueen, it could be a pivotal moment in Bond’s illustrious history.
