Joel Culpepper has shared his silky-smooth new single, ‘Tears Of A Crown’.

Culpepper is a special talent and one who sings from the heart. On ‘Tears Of A Crown’, he isn’t scared to open up about his fragilities and vulnerabilities. The track arrives during a monumental week in the south-east London artist’s career as he gears up to make his debut on Later… with Jools Holland.

On the track, Culpepper battles with his inferiority complex and lacking self-belief. Considering the wealth of supreme talent that he has at his disposal, ‘Tears Of A Crown’ offers the clearest indication yet that those concerns are misplaced.

“This song was originally an intro to the album,” Culpepper commented. “Myself and Swindle felt we only needed a taste of this to start the album, but Guy Chambers was adamant it was a full song. He organised another full studio day for us to get it right.”

The singer added: “He could see on our faces that he had got it right, clapped and said “now we have a song!”

“People say ‘Heavy is the head that wears the crown’, I’ve truly felt that,” he continued. “Our biggest fear is not that we are powerless but we are powerful beyond measure. Guy believed in this song before we did. It’s taken me all this time to realise that belief needs to also come from the person who is set to wear the crown. The first and final battle is always an internal one.”

Culpepper’s debut album, Sgt Culpepper, arrives next month, and he’s just announced a tour later in the year in celebration of the album. The run will begin at Belgrave in Leeds on November 3rd, before culminating at Brighton’s Patterns on the 25th.

Powerful soul music will never get old, and Culpepper shows that it will forever remain relevant no matter what day or age we find ourselves in. The track has a timeless quality to it and a polished contemporary edge that you need in your life.
