Jim Carrey reveals why he ended retirement for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’

After declaring that he’d retired from acting back in 2022, Jim Carrey is making a return for Sonic The Hedgehog 3. As his first film since the second movie in the animated franchise, it seems that Carrey’s commitment to his character of Dr Ivo ‘Eggman’ Robotnik is bigger than his commitment to calling it quits.

Carrey’s career spans several decades. While his first roles were in the 1980s, his breakthrough came in 1994 with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. That same year, he had a golden run of star-making comedy movies thanks to The Mask and Dumb and Dumber. In the following years, he gathered up several defining roles in movies like Bruce Almighty, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Cable Guy and more.

Additionally, his career spans genres. Although he is best known for his comedic work, Carrey has also proved his power in emotive dramas like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show, or even the challenging biopic about anti-comic Andy Kaufman, Man on the Moon.

However, in 2022, Carrey announced that he was retiring from acting. “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious,” Carrey told Access Hollywood during the press tour for Sonic 2. He continued, “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

In recent years, Carrey has had a real change of pace. He has been getting more and more into Transcendental Meditation and spoke about the impact his career, especially the film Man On The Moon, had on his mental health.

Why did Jim Carrey retire?

In 2022, it seemed that he was ready to give it up for a more peaceful life as he added, “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

However, Sonic The Hedgehog seems to be that golden script able to coax him out as he is returning to voice the role of Dr. Ivo ‘Eggman’ Robotnik for a third time. A reporter for AP Entertainment recently asked Carrey why this film brought him out of retirement, and the actor’s response was simple; money.

“I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly”, he told them. However, it doesn’t seem that this is a full return for the actor beyond this movie.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is set to be released in cinemas on December 20th, 2024. At this stage, it remains unclear whether Carrey will make a fully-fledged return to Hollywood, or if he’ll remain contributing exclusively to the animated film franchise.
