Jennifer Lawrence condemns Republican politician Mike Pence

The American actor Jennifer Lawrence took a swipe at former US Vice President Mike Pence for his alleged endorsement of conversion therapy during the 35th annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York on May 11th.

The Hunger Games star attended the ceremony to pay tribute to singer Orville Peck, who received the prestigious Vito Russo Award. The accolade recognised the impactful contributions of LGBTQ+ media professionals in advancing acceptance and understanding within the community.

“I love seeing so many humans who can top their field while still being power bottoms,” Lawrence said, beginning her speech in honour of Peck.

Continuing, Lawrence revealed her deep adoration for the LGBTQ+ community and reflected on her own experiences. “I love the gay community. In fact, I was in love with a homosexual. I tried to convert him for years, but now I know conversion therapy doesn’t work,” she recalled.

The actor then targeted former Vice President Mike Pence. He served as the 48th vice president between 2017 and 2021 as Donald Trump’s second in command. “Did you hear me, Mike Pence?” Lawrence asked. “I said conversion therapy isn’t real, even though I know you think it worked on you,” she added.

Lawrence rounded out her passionate rebuke with a quip. “He’s in New York tonight. He’s receiving a Kid’s Choice Award for weirdest dick,” she added.

Elsewhere during the evening, New York Attorney General Letitia James, who took the stage to introduce the GLAAD president, Sarah Kate Ellis, incited a raw of applause from the audience.

“I love you more,” she shouted in response to the excited bustle. “In New York, we say gay. We say lesbian. We say bi. We say transgender, and we say history,” she stated while addressing Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” legislation. “In New York, we don’t just say these words. We embody them each and every day, and we celebrate the history of everyone.”

Meanwhile, Lawrence is enjoying a second wind in her career. Following an Oscar win in 2013 for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, she endured a period in which management entities increasingly took her career out of her hands.

Re-evaluating her career, Lawrence founded the production company Excellent Cadaver in 2018 and has begun taking the reins in a run of successful movies, including Causeway and No Hard Feelings
