Jennifer Aniston reveals emotional connection to Jennette McCurdy ahead of their new series
Jennifer Aniston has opened up about what brought her and iCarly star Jenette McCurdy closer in light of their upcoming show.
The star of iCarly, McCurdy, published her memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, on August 9th, 2022, via Simon & Schuster. It spent over 80 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list. Following this success, McCurdy and film producer Ari Katcher wrote the ten-episode comedy-drama series for Apple TV+.
On July 1st, it was announced that Aniston would star in the all-important role of McCurdy’s mother in the new series. McCurdy had an extremely complicated relationship with her mother, who somewhat forced her into acting from an extremely young age. Her mother passed away in 2013.
Now, Aniston has opened up about the importance of the project to her. Speaking to People, she shared, “When it came across my desk as an option, an offer to play this character and work with Jennette and Sharon Horgan and LuckyChap, I was pretty much immediately intrigued and flattered and excited. It’s going to be wonderful. It’s going to be pretty great to start shooting it.”
She then praised the “special” child star, who is now 33. “The fact that she’s the young woman that she is, having lived that life, is nothing short of remarkable,” Aniston commented.
The Friends star has a deeper connection to the show, an emotional tie fans might otherwise not expect. “We have a lot in common,” Aniston shared of herself and McCurdy. “We had very similar moms.” Aniston had an estranged relationship with her mother, Nancy Dow, who passed in 2016.
The announcement of the new show revealed that it will centre around the “codependent relationship” between a young female actor in a popular kids’ show and her “narcissistic mother.” Apple has also disclosed that McCurdy’s character will be 18, despite the novel spanning a larger portion of her life. No casting has been announced for the child star.
The upcoming show will mark Aniston’s second collaboration with Apple TV. She also stars in The Morning Show, which she also executive produces. The show’s fourth season is set to premiere on September 17th.
