Jazz icon Anthony Jackson dead at 73
Bass legend and jazz supremo Anthony Jackson has died aged 73.
His death was confirmed in an Instagram post by Fodera Guitars, who wrote, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Anthony Jackson — one of the most visionary and influential bassists in the history of our instrument. Anthony’s impact extended far beyond the notes he played.”
Fodera Guitars continued, “He pioneered the concept of the six-string ‘contrabass guitar’, revolutionising the role of the electric bass in art, jazz, funk, and beyond.”
Jackson, who was born in New York City in 1972, leaves behind a huge musical legacy, including playing a major role in developing and popularising the six-string bass.
During the 1970s, Jackson began to establish himself as a session musician and contributed to records by artists including Steely Dan, Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, Buddy Rich, George Benson, The O’Jays, Paul Simon, and Luther Vandross.
He also performed on Madonna’s self-titled debut album from 1983, which catapulted her into pop superstardom.
The tributes to the revolutionary jazz player have been led by Al Di Meola, who shared on Instagram, “Anthony was one of the most extraordinary musicians I’ve ever had the honor to play with — a true innovator whose genius on the six-string contrabass reshaped modern music. His sound, precision, and soul were unmatched.”
He added, “From Land of the Midnight Sun, Elegant Gypsy to countless unforgettable moments on stage, he brought a power and sensitivity that could move anyone who listened.”
Di Meola’s tribute also contained his “heartfelt thanks to Danette Albetta for the love and care she gave Anthony through these last years,” which suggests that Jackson had been ill for a long time. “Your devotion made a difference,” the guitarist continued.
No cause of death has been confirmed.
