Javicia Leslie to become the first-ever Black ‘Batwoman’
Actress Javicia Leslie is making history after it was revealed that she would be the new lead actress in the popular television series Batwoman
Leslie, who previously starred in CBS show God Friended Me, becomes the first Black actress to portray the character in a live-action TV show or film and replaces Ruby Rose who left the role after season one of the show.
“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television,” Leslie commented upon the news break, adding: “And as a bisexual woman, I am honoured to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.”
She continued in a post on social media: “For all of the little black girls dreaming to be a superhero one day… it’s possible.”
Leslie, who will play the role of Ryan Wilder, has been described as a “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed” character.
Reacting to the news of her replacement, Ruby Rose congratulated Leslie on her success with a post on social media: “This is amazing!! I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman,” she said.
“I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can’t wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing!!”
