Jason Momoa confirms he’s returning for ‘Dune 3’
Jason Momoa has confirmed his character Duncan Idaho will return for the third instalment of director Denis Villeneuve’s all-conquering Dune series.
During an appearance on Today to promote the upcoming A Minecraft Movie, Momoa spilt the beans to host Craig Melvin. Momoa did hint that perhaps he wasn’t supposed to share this information quite yet. After all, Idaho supposedly died at the end of the first film when he sacrificed himself to ensure Paul Atreides and his mother Jessica escaped from murderous Sardaukar soldiers.
It all came about when Melvin asked, “Your character died in the first Dune movie. But in the books, he comes back as a clone. Dune: Messiah is set to start production later this year. Have you got a call?”
Momoa responded, “Well, I’m not sure if I’m going to get in trouble or not, but it’s the same thing like Game of Thrones, you know what I mean? If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault, right? Yeah, I’m going to be coming back.”
An excited Melvin realised he’d just gotten a scoop, so he asked Momoa to clarify, “Duncan Idaho is making a comeback?” To his delight, Momoa beamed, “I’m making a comeback. You heard it first, right here with you, baby. You got me in trouble!”
Information about Dune 3 is thin on the ground, but Villeneuve has revealed that he doesn’t view it as the third part of a trilogy. Instead, he feels it will be the start of something new for the franchise. “First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” the French-Canadian director revealed. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished.”
“If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy,” Villeneuve continued. “It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.”
