Jared Leto, the Oscar-winning actor and 30 Seconds to Mars frontman, has just returned from 12 days isolated in the desert to discover that a deadly pandemic has dominated the world.
While fellow Hollywood actors like Idris Elba, Olga Kurylenko, Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have all tested positive for the virus, Leto has been isolated on a silent meditation retreat in the desert for the past 12 days.
Returning to his regular working life today, Leto revealed his shock at entering a world entirely different from the one he left two weeks ago. “Wow,” his social media post began. “12 days ago I began a silent meditation in the desert.
“We were totally isolated. No phone, no communication etc. We had no idea what was happening outside the facility,” Leto continued. “Walked out yesterday into a very different world. One that’s been changed forever. Mind blowing — to say the least.”
Leto added: “I’m getting messages from friends and family all around the globe and catching up on what’s going on.”
The ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease was first officially identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei in China. As of 16 March, more than 173,000 cases of COVID-19 have been officially confirmed but the actual number is thought to be much higher due to substantial under-reporting of cases.
With more than 6,600 people having died from the virus, COVID-19 has now spread into more than 150 other countries—including mainland Europe, South America and North America. Given the exponential growth in cases in countries like Italy and Spain, the WHO have now stated that Europe was the current centre of the pandemic.
