It has been confirmed that Jared Leto will play the role of iconic pop artist Andy Warhol in a new upcoming film.
The 48-year-old actor and frontman of rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars confirmed the news in a post on social media. ‘Yes it’s true I will be playing Andy Warhol in an upcoming film,’ Leto wrote. ‘And so grateful and excited about the opportunity’
Announcing the news to commemorate Warhol on what would have been his birthday, Leto shared a series of different images of the artist before adding: “We miss you and your genius”.
While the details of the planned film are yet to be confirmed, it would appear that the biopic is the same project that Leto was previously attached to in 2016. That film, which Leto was rumoured to be producing, was set to be based on the Victor Bockris 1989 book Warhol: The Biography.
Leto, it was reported, had managed to acquire the rights alongside co-producer Michael De Luca.
The Hollywood Reporter claims that Terence Winter, the famed producer and writer who previously worked on the likes of Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos before being nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay on Martin Scorsese film The Wolf of Wall Street, is now attached to Leto’s Warhol film.
The film is likely to explore the complex character of Andy Warhol, a deeply creative artist whose work transcended music, film, sculpture and more. See Leto’s confirmation, below.
