Once again, James Gunn has called out director Martin Scorcese for his criticisms of the Marvel films franchise. In the past, the legendary filmmaker has said that the films are “not cinema”.
Back in 2019, Scorcese put his foot in it by comparing the Marvel franchise, which includes films like Iron Man and The Avengers series, to a theme park. He argued: “It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.” And in an opinion piece, he argued that “they lack something essential”.
James Gunn, the director of Suicide Squad and Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy, has again criticised Scorcses’s remarks, arguing that his public admonishments of the franchise served purely to attract publicity for his film The Irishman. After being asked if he felt a responsibility for the Marvel films, Gunn said of Scorcese’s comments: “It just seems awful cynical that he kept coming out against Marvel, and that’s the only thing that would get him press for his movie, so then he just kept coming out against Marvel so that he could get press for his movie,” he commented, while on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “So he’s creating his movie in the shadow of the Marvel films, and so he uses that to get attention for something that he wasn’t getting as much attention as he wanted for it.”
Despite his criticism of Scorcese’s attitude, Gunn admitted his respect for the director’s insight, saying: “He’s one of the greatest filmmakers who’s ever existed. I love his movies. I can watch his movies with no problem. And he said a lot of things that I agree with. There is a lot of things that are true about what he said. There are a lot of heartless, soulless spectacle films out there that don’t reflect what should be happening.”
Gunn is currently working on the next addition to the Guardians Of The Galaxy series. In 2018, after some of his controversial comments resurfaced on Twitter, he was taken off the project. However, in March 2019 he was reinstated.
Scorsese’s new film, a western crime drama called Killers Of The Flower Moon, stars Leonardo Dicaprio, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser and Robert Deniro. It is set to be released in 2021.
