James Gunn involved in ‘V for Vendetta’ series adaptation
A new TV adaptation of the renowned comic series V for Vendetta is in the works at HBO, according to reports.
Variety first started circulating the speculation on November 10th, citing sources that Pete Jackson is attached to write the project, while James Gunn and Peter Safran from DC Studios are set to executive produce it. They will be joined by Warner Bros Media, who are reportedly on board to produce the series.
Both HBO and DC Studios are yet to comment on reports. Notably, the series wouldn’t be without precedent as another DC adaptation, The Penguin, became a massive hit on the network and landed Colin Farrell the award for ‘Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film’ at the 2025 Golden Globes.
As far as V for Vendetta, the graphic novel was previously adapted into a film in 2005, which starred Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman. However, the original author of the series, Alan Moore, distanced himself from the movie and did not wish to be credited as part of it, so it is not known what his involvement will be in the new TV adaptation.
Moore debuted the comic in 1982 before DC took over the publishing rights in 1988. The story is set in a dystopian near future where the UK is controlled by the fascist Norsefire party. The main character V is a rebel who dresses in a Guy Fawkes mask, who plots on overturning the government.
He is helped along the way by his sidekick Evey Hammond, a young woman he rescued from the secret police forces within the country, with many coming to view the story as a symbol of oppressive governments within the political landscape.
No further details on the cast and release of the V for Vendetta TV adaptation have been made public by HBO, DC Studios, or any of those reportedly involved in the production.
