James Cameron reveals plans to make new ‘Terminator’ movie
Legendary director James Cameron has revealed his plans to make a new Terminator film, but he also admitted the challenges that could come with trying to write another movie in 2024.
Thankfully, Cameron has specified that he is interested in creating another installation of the classic movie franchise. Nevertheless, due to the nature of the current climate, Cameron highlighted one of the main problems he faces with making another Terminator is how closely some of the themes may resonate with real live events.
For example, conversations surrounding artificial intelligence are no longer made from a hypothetical perspective. Over the last few years, the technology has advanced to an incredible degree and begun to influence multiple industries, including creative fields.
In a new conversation with The Guardian, Cameron said, “We’re at a point right now where it gets it gets harder and harder to write science fiction because we’re living in a science fiction world on a day to day basis.”
The filmmaker continued, “I’m working through some of the themes that I want to bring into a new Terminator film or possibly even a kind of a reboot of a larger story framework and it’s difficult right now because I want to let the smoke clear on the whole thing.”
Cameron also believes that the tumultuous ride is only going to get scarier with no normalcy on the horizon, adding, “That’s going to be a ride that we’re going to be watching for probably the rest of human history but certainly the next few years are going to be quite telling.”
The ‘Terminator’ franchise
The original Terminator film premiered in 1984, and was an instant hit, grossing $4 million in its opening weekend. Since then, the film has spawned many sequels and reboots. The sequel, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, is even more beloved than the original, but later installations such as Salvation and Genisys failed to match expectations.
Furthermore, there is still evidently an audience for Terminator-based films and series, though, as the new animated show, Terminator Zero, is to arrive on Netflix on August 29th. The series is set in 1997 as a Terminator is sent back in time to protect a scientist called Malcolm Lee, who is attempting to invent a new AI system that would rival Skynet.
The series synopsis reads, “As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children.”
The cryptic trailers aren’t the most dialogue-heavy and leave fans guessing as to what they can expect from the animation. Malcolm Lee says in the recent trailer, “The end of the world comes tomorrow,” and the persistent end-of-the-world pessimism that surrounds the Terminator movies is enough to get fans excited and highlight the demand for more installations of the franchise.
Whether or not Cameron will create another Terminator remains to be seen, but the project is certainly on his agenda.
