Jacob Elordi names his favourite movies of all time

Jacob Elordi may still be in the infancy of his career, but he’s quickly shaking off his teen show and rom-com roots in order to carve out a place as an incoming indie darling. After making his feature debut in Netflix’s fanfiction-like teen romance The Kissing Booth five years ago, the Australian actor seems to have developed a penchant for a different kind of cinema.

Though he’s yet to give up his role as Nate Jacobs in HBO’s shimmering teen drama Euphoria, Elordi has gradually been redirecting his film focus into quirkier, more critically acclaimed territory. Collaborating with the likes of A24, Sofia Coppola, and Emerald Fennell, he’s swiftly pivoting from Netflix’s leading man to cult on-screen presence.

Between a leading role as Elvis Presley in Priscilla and an appearance opposite Letterboxd favourites Rosamund Pike and Barry Keoghan in Saltburn, it seems that Elordi is having no trouble making that switch. Elordi’s own tastes veer far more into Academy Award winners and artistic endeavours than filler rom-coms, as demonstrated by the list of favourite films he recently divulged to Letterboxd.

Though his answer starts out tentatively – “Oh gosh, I knew I was going to get asked this, and I’m so, so not prepared for it” – Elordi seems as calm and collected as ever while he lists off his top cinematic picks, which range from a Tim Burton classic to a Francis Ford Coppola epic.

Elordi picks out The Nightmare Before Christmas as his first film, the beloved 1993 stop-motion classic. The film has been continually adored by fans worldwide, who have been desperately debating if the film fits more into the Halloween movie or Christmas movie category and clamouring for a live-action version. If the project does come to fruition, it seems Elordi would be jumping at the chance to take on the lead role – the actor once dressed as Jack Skellington for Halloween.

The actor also picks out Coppola’s 1979 epic Apocalypse Now, which is widely accepted as one of the greatest films of all time, as well as Robert Benton’s Kramer vs. Kramer from the same year. He rounds out the list with Christopher Nolan’s entry into the superhero genre, The Dark Knight, an unsurprising choice considering Elordi’s continual admiration for Heath Ledger.

“My dream co-star definitely would be Heath Ledger,” he once told IMDb, “There’s been a lot of times in Hollywood where I’ve kind of wanted to throw in the towel, and then I’ve sort of watched something that he’s said or watched his journey and it’s made me feel pretty good.” Elordi first saw the film with his dad when he was 12, recalling, “I just freaked out.”

Spanning the best of superhero movies, beloved stop-motion, and some dramatic classics, it’s a selection of films audiences would likely love to see Elordi take a stab at as his career progresses.
