Jack Nicholson’s former partner claims the actor isn’t retired
It’s been 14 years since Jack Nicholson last appeared in a feature film, and while he never officially announced his retirement, it’s become widely accepted the legendary star will never be seen on-screen again.
After all, the three-time Academy Award winner has been keeping a low profile ever since outside of regularly being spotted court side at Los Angeles Lakers games, but the fact he didn’t come right out and confirm he was permanently done with acting has kept the tiniest ember burning.
Nicholson’s swansong wasn’t the most memorable, the movie saw him reunite with Terms of Endearment and As Good As It Gets writer and director James L. Brooks for star-studded romantic comedy How Do You Know. The film bombed at the box office before managing to gain a place in the history books as the iconic actor’s final credit.
If Tom Cruise couldn’t convince him to end his self-imposed exile for a blockbuster action comedy, then the list of people who conceivably could is a very short one indeed. However, Brooks did suggest that Nicholson wasn’t ruling out the prospect of a comeback entirely, even if it’s fast closing in on a decade and a half since he showed up on a film set.
For all intents and purposes, Nicholson is enjoying the quiet life away from the spotlight having spent over half a century in Hollywood, where he became one of its biggest stars and most respected performers, accruing a record-setting 12 Oscar nominations along the way.
His off-screen antics were just as famous as the performances he delivered in front of the cameras, and it’s former flame Lara Flynn Boyle who suggested he may not be completely retired at all. In an interview with People, the actor revealed that not only are the pair still friends on good terms, but the concept of retirement doesn’t necessarily apply.
When asked for an update on how he’s spending his free time, Boyle suggested he’s “making magic.” Not only that, but the Men in Black II star pointed out – factually, it should be noted – that he “never retired” officially. “The world of Jack is always here,” she said. “There’s no retiring for the world of Jack. Never.”
Nicholson turned 87-years-old earlier this year and hasn’t worked since production wrapped on How Do You Know in 2009, so even though Boyle hinted that he isn’t retired, the chances of him making one last stand in cinema remain exceedingly slim.
