Jack Black shuts down speculation about Tenacious D reunion
Jack Black has poured scorn on speculation that Tenacious D are set to reunite anytime soon.
The comedy rock band have been inactive since Black’s bandmate Kyle Gass joked about the attempted assassination attempt made against Donald Trump while on-stage in Sydney, Australia.
During the concert, which took place on Gass’ 64th birthday, Black gave him a cake on stage and told him to make a wish, to which the musician replied, “Don’t miss Trump next time.”
Amid backlash to Gass’ joke, Tenacious D cancelled the rest of the tour, embarked on an indefinite hiatus, and Black denounced his bandmate, claiming he was “blindsided” by the remark made in Sydney.
The Jumanji star also labelled Gass’ joke as “hate speech”.
Now, as Black prepares to host Saturday Night Live on April 4th, an episode which will also see Jack White serve as the musical guest, he has quashed talk of their impending reunion.
While signing autographs to fans outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza as he prepares for his hosting gig, Black told TMZ in response to a reporter questioning him on their current status, “We don’t have any plans. No plans.”
Although Black didn’t explicitly rule out that Tenacious D would return at some point in the future, even if nothing is currently lined up, his bandmate Gass previously said in January that he was confident that they would one day share a stage together again.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gass said, “We will serve no D-wine before it’s D-time — but we will be back. We will return.”
He also acknowledged that he understood why a hiatus was the only option for the band, explaining, “Jack has this magnificent career; I can’t even count the franchises now. So as hard as it was, I just had to take the long ride home.”
Gass revealed that he “can’t watch” the clip back, and has only managed to do so once but “even then I was shuttering” his eyes.
The musician also said of his current relationship with Black, “We hashed it out. And it was hard. It is like a marriage. You go through these ups and downs, and try to understand your partner.”
