Isiah Whitlock Jr and Stenhousemuir FC: an unlikely love story

On December 30th, 2025, the world bid goodbye to Isaiah Whitlock Jr, the legend most famous for his role as the slimy Senator Clay Davis in The Wire, as he passed away at the age of 71.

He was memorable for his stints on TV as well as in notable films, six of which were just with Spike Lee, being a favourite of the director. However, Whitlock’s biggest cultural impact, and I’m not even joking, is the way he said the word ‘shit’; if you know, you know.

Of the many tributes paid to Whitlock in the wake of his death, one stands out above the rest. Scottish football club Stenhousemuir FC posted a statement on their website in tribute to the fallen star, writing, “The club was proud to have his backing and appreciative of the goodwill he showed towards Stenhousemuir over the years”.

Odd as it may seem, this American actor born in South Bend, Indiana, really was a fan of a third-tier Scottish football team, with Whitlock first revealing his fondness for the Falkirk-based club, who are also known as the Warriors, in 2020, when he commented on a livestream of an American watching Scottish football, asking to be alerted when his team were playing.

He also rode to their defence during one of their lowest moments, when English football pundit Chris Sutton negatively compared Stonehousemuir to the faltering Manchester United, which drew the ire of their fans, as Whitlock tweeted in response, “Manchester United being compared to Stenhousemuir? Sheeeeeeeeee-it! That’s a win for the Warriors”.

The club were obviously over the moon at this heavyweight backing and reached out to Whitlock, offering to host him at their ground and send him a Stonehousemuir shirt. They clearly followed through with this promise as Whitlock would regularly post pictures of himself wearing the garb, often with a message of encouragement for his beloved team attached.

Despite numerous attempts, men’s football (I refuse to call it soccer) simply hasn’t taken off in the United States. The MLS attracts big names, most notably Lionel Messi, but that’s more to do with the money they pay them than the quality of competition. Whitlock seems to have taken a real interest in the game, specifically in Scotland, for aside from his affinity for the Warriors, he also donated money to Dunipace FC after a fire destroyed part of their pitch.

Whitlock isn’t the only famous face to lend their support to Stonehousemuir, with the well-travelled Monty Python member Michael Palin also a fan. He sent the team a message of support following their first-ever league title victory in 2024 and even contributed money to help them buy two new players in 2016; if you were a cash-strapped club in the Scottish lower leagues, you’d be fuming.

As friends, family, and fans continue to come to terms with Whitlock’s death, it’s important to look back and celebrate every aspect of his life, and while he’ll mostly be remembered as a stellar performer, to one very specific group of people, he was a kind, generous, passionate man who found love in the strangest of places.
