American indie rock singer-songwriter Indigo De Souza has announced the release of her second album, Any Shape You Take, and has shared the first single, ‘Kill Me’.
“I wrote ‘Kill Me’ sometime in 2018 when I was really tired and fucked up in a lot of ways,” De Souza explains. “I was deeply consumed in a big crazy love and coming to terms with the reality of living with mental illness. I recorded myself stream-of-conscious singing it on the kitchen floor at night with my laptop cam. I found the video about a year later, and could barely recognize the person singing. It was such a strange feeling watching the video because I couldn’t remember writing the song, but little bits and pieces of it felt familiar to me. It felt like it had been a lot longer than a year.”
The song, folky and with an almost yodelling vocal line in the verses, slinks and slithers with various anxieties brought to life through a soft-loud dynamic that propels the chorus into full-on attack mode.
De Souza’s first album, I Love My Mom, was a supremely cool slice of indie rock. I first heard of De Souza through her song ‘How I Get Myself Killed’. It was a classic case of having a friend of a friend, someone who was a little older and cooler, come around and play the songs that they liked. All slow-burning intensity and pent up fury, ‘How I Get Myself Killed’ remains eternally etched into my brain and remains one of my favourite songs to this day.
From the sounds of ‘Kill Me’, Any Shape You Take seems to be building on I Love My Mom‘s foundation and doubling down on the chiming/fuzzy guitar dichotomy. It’s a good formula, and De Souza plays with it so well that I don’t see any reason for her to change now.
