Iggy Pop believes we’re living in a “very insecure” time
Iggy Pop has little hope for our current age. In a new interview with friend and musician Anna Von Hausswolff, he has stated that the modern age is “very insecure.”
Speaking together on behalf of Interview Magazine, singer-songwriter Von Hausswolff posed to the music legend Pop that post-Covid-19 society has seen a lacklustre re-engagement with activist groups, as if the world is giving up on its own future.
Pop agreed with Van Hausswolff’s reflection, adding, “I know what you’re talking about. We’re in a very insecure time right now. People are very insecure.” He also added, “There’s a lot of Xanax going around.”
Of her new album, Iconoclast, Von Hausswolff mused, “The album is about questioning something and breaking out from something. It could be an illusion, a system, a relationship.” When making the album, she focused on breaking out of cycles of worship.
Pop deemed this an apt, “There must be something in the stars right now because that’s happening up and down levels of society. The boundaries and nationalities right now are often very silly.”
His interviewee agreed, noting a societal tendency towards obsession. Pop noted how social media is worsening this: “It’s becoming evident, probably through social media, that there are certain people who seem to be doing so well. Meaning, if you count up the numbers or look at the size of the yacht or how many jets or how much they can influence a government. And then there are people who just aren’t getting anywhere and they feel that way.”
Despite the general malaise of our era, Pop has found new music to pull him out of misery. He mentioned Ethel Cain, who features on her new album on the song ‘Aging Young Woman’, and who he deemed “dynamite.”
He also mentioned discovering Sleaford Mods and Lambrini Girls after he took over from Jarvis Cocker on BBC Radio 6, where he broadcasts every Sunday afternoon.
