Idris Elba replaces Will Smith in ‘Suicide Squad’ sequel
Idris Elba has been chosen as the replacement for Will Smith in the Suicide Squad sequel and will play the role of ‘Deadshot’.
Smith has been forced to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts. James Gunn, who has been tapped to write and direct the film, was keen to find a Hollywood A-lister to replace him before production begins in September.
It is believed that Elba, who has appeared in comic book film The Losers as well as playing the role of Heimdall in the Thor and Avengers films, was the only choice made by DC Comics.
The original Suicide Squadfilm, which starred the likes of Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie, was a massive hit and grossed in excess of $746 million worldwide at box office.
While news around the sequel has been tight-lipped, many believe that Robbie will return in the role of Harley Quinn — a role that successfully completed her break into mainstream Hollywood.
Warner Bros. has scheduled The Suicide Squad for August 6, 2021.
