Idris Elba will not be replacing Will Smith as the character ‘Deadshot’ in the new Suicide Squad, according to reports.

Instead, it is believed Elba has been handed an unknown, unspecified character in the film by its director James Gunn as per Variety.

It was earlier this year that speculation of Elba’s inclusion in the film began to grow. However, its thought that Warner Bros. are desperate to leave the role of ‘Deadshot’ open in an attempt to bring back Smith in the future.

Smith has been forced to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts. James Gunn, who has been tapped to write and direct the film, was keen to find a Hollywood A-lister to replace him before production begins in September.

The original Suicide Squad film, which starred the likes of Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie, was a massive hit and grossed in excess of $746 million worldwide at box office.

While news around the sequel has been tight-lipped, many believe that Robbie will return in the role of Harley Quinn — a role that successfully completed her break into mainstream Hollywood.

Warner Bros. has scheduled The Suicide Squad for August 6, 2021.
