Ice Cube to star in new ‘Friday’ movie
Ice Cube has closed a deal to write and star in a new Friday sequel, the fourth instalment in the beloved cult comedy franchise.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news by revealing New Line Cinema president and CCO Richard Brener had finalised the deal with Cube for Last Friday.
It will be the first movie in the franchise since 2002’s Friday After Next and it brings to an end Cube’s long, painful journey to return to the movie series that cemented him as a Hollywood superstar.
The former NWA star has been trying to get another Friday movie going since 2011. In 2022, he blasted New Line and parent company Warner Bros Pictures for dragging their heels over the project and refusing to let the IP revert to him. He also claimed he’d written two scripts that were rejected by the studio: one because “the timing wasn’t right” and one that ended up permanently mired in development hell.
“Warner Brothers is weird right now,” he groused. “I don’t know what they’re doing, they don’t know what they’re doing. We’d love to have it back. I think it’s going to be close to a time when we get it back. So, we’ll either wait for that time, or we’ll keep trying to convince them that they need to let us control the movie. It’s my movie, but they have distribution control.”
In June 2024, though, he revealed that the sequel had finally gained traction at the studio, mainly thanks to co-chief Michael De Luca championing the film.
“They have new leadership: my man Mike De Luca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first Friday and Players Club and All About the Benjamins,” Cube told SiriusXM’s Flavour of the Week. “Mike De Luca was there.”
There is currently no timeline regarding a release date for Last Friday.
