Hugh Jackman to star in Ridley Scott adaptation of ‘Treasure Island’
Hugh Jackman is set to star in the lead role of a new film adaptation of Treasure Island being directed by Ridley Scott, according to reports.
Jackman has played many mystical and iconic characters throughout his career, but it seems that Long John Silver from the classic 1883 novel by Robert Louis Stevenson could be his next big role.
Per reports in Deadline, the Wolverine star is set to lead the cast in the new adaptation being directed by acclaimed filmmaker Scott, which is apparently heading to market for potential studio buyers.
Understandably, very few other details about the project have emerged at this stage, but it is tagged with Jack Thorne, who is coming off the back of the storming Netflix hit Adolescence to write the script.
No further details are known about the potential new Treasure Island film, except that 20th Century Fox, Scott’s usual preferred studio of choice, turned down the chance to distribute the movie per mutual agreement.
However, the news does paint a picture of where Scott plans to go next in the scores of his vast directorial career, coming off the back of his latest film The Dog Stars, which is set to be released this August.
Featuring an all-star cast including the likes of Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Alison Janney, the film is set to follow the hauntingly familiar premise of a devastating pandemic, and a former pilot and marine who must learn to rebuild their lives.
Scott could be hoping that this marks an upturn in his fortunes of late, after his most recently-released movies to this point, 2023’s Napoleon and 2024’s Gladiator II, were roundly panned by critics.
Despite this, the filmmaker was bold enough to say that most modern movies are “shit” and “drowning in mediocrity” at an event in London last October, before admitting that he likes to watch his own movies as they are “really good”.
