How many filmmakers are billionaires?
“Every aesthetic decision you make – and you make thousands of them every day, have to – in theory, must be done from you being a blank slate.” – James Cameron
Anyone who has ever studied film at college or university will likely understand the odds of actually landing a job in the industry.
Not only is it one of the most competitive routes, but it’s also one of the most challenging to navigate from the off, even more so if you’re unsure what, specifically, but it is also that you’d like to do. And for those who have their heart set on becoming the next best filmmaker, the chances of making it are even lower.
And that’s if you already have a good support network behind you to forge the right connections or are lucky enough to be a nepo baby – otherwise, you may as well start thinking about plan B. Because the truth is, even for established players like Steven Spielberg, being a filmmaker is one of the toughest games out there, because it’s not just about possessing technical skill, it’s about storytelling.
And even people like Spielberg struggle from time to time, which is usually when he chooses to assemble a trusty team to make sure his ideas are executed as best as they possibly can. As he once reflected to EW, “That’s what keeps me honest, right? And a little bit humble, in the sense that when I make a movie, I never think I have all the answers. I think I’ve stayed collaborative my entire career because I don’t have all the answers.”
Many other filmmakers have a similar mindset and approach. When you’re on the same level as Spielberg, there isn’t much room for mistakes, despite how deep the pocket might stretch. And in his scenario, it stretches far, $7.1 billion in net worth, to be exact.
Obviously, Spielberg has the credentials to show for it, having created more than a handful of the best and most iconic films of all time. But who else sits in his elite billionaire’s club?
So, how many filmmakers are billionaires?
If you take a closer look at the other four names with net worths over a billion, a common thread starts to show. Each of them has been tied to major Hollywood hits or some of the most successful films in box office history. James Cameron is another big name on that list, having earned his place more than once with titles like Titanic and Avatar sitting comfortably at the peak of his career.
Peter Jackson is also one of them, who started out making low-key horror films before earning his name through the Lord of the Rings franchise, along with George Lucas, who also had a heavy hand in changing the landscape of action storytelling forever with the Star Wars series. Both of those sit at $1.7 billion and $5.3 billion net worth, respectively.
Another at the top of the ladder, and one of the richest Black filmmakers in the industry, is Tyler Perry. Thanks to his Madea character, his studio in Atlanta, and the fact that he owns most of his own work, Perry is high in the ranks when it comes to the industry’s game of numbers. Among them, however, Spielberg takes the crown when it comes to the richest of them all, an achievement culminating from more than five decades of work.
But being prolific and having a longstanding reputation aren’t the only reasons why Spielberg remains one of the biggest and most important names. After all, he didn’t just deliver many blockbuster films time and time again; he all but reinvented the art itself, blending nuanced characterisation and storytelling with generational resonance and cultural impact.
