When John Wick came out of relative obscurity in 2014 to take popular culture by storm throughout the rest of the decade, awarded two further sequels, as well as an inclusion in the wildly popular millennial video game Fortnite. With the franchise’s fourth film set for release in 2022, casting announcements are coming thick and fast, with Mortal Kombat’s Hiroyuki Sanada the latest to be added to the ensemble.
With additional credits including The Wolverine, The Last Samurai, and Avengers: Endgame, the second highest-grossing film of all time, Hiroyuki Sanada has been cast in a yet undisclosed role in the film. The actor will appear alongside Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Rina Sawayama and Shamier Anderson when production begins in the summer, on location in Japan, France and Germany.
The Japanese-born actor is an icon of his country, renowned for his star-making role in The Twilight Samurai, before his relatively recent break into the Hollywood mainstream with Netflix’s Army of the Dead and the HBO series Westworld. Welcoming Sanada onto the project, producer Chad Stahelski stated, “Having long admired Hiroyuki as both actor and action performer, I’m thrilled and honoured to welcome him to the John Wick family”.
Set for release on May 27th 2022, the fourth film in the John Wick series will also be directed by Stahelski, with Shay Hatten and Michael Finch responsible for the screenplay. With the first three films in the series having grossed $584.7 million at the global box office, John Wick is quickly becoming one of the most bankable film franchises, with thanks to the resurgence of actor Keanu Reeves.
Reeves isn’t the only one on the rise, with John Wick: Chapter 4 the latest high profile film for Hiroyuki Sanada, also set to appear in Sony’s Bullet Train opposite Brad Pitt in 2022.
