California pop-rockers HAIM have returned with a new track featured in the upcoming film The Last Letter From Your Lover, ‘Cherry Flavored Stomach Ache’.
Pairing up the light and airy vibes of the band’s signature swing with some fun touches, like a country-adjacent snare drum drive and some heavily-processed toots from a harmonica, ‘Cherry Flavored Stomach Ache’ is actually quite a downer, despite its spritely energy: “One thing’s for sure, I’m not sleeping here tonight/And I’m not interested in what you think is right.” Illustrating a quarrel presumably between two lovers, lead singer Danielle Haim doesn’t let the sugar-coated sweetness take her for a ride. “I’m not gonna see you anymore,” she sings.
The song is the first new original from the band since they released their awesome third album Women in Music, Pt. III in the summer of 2020. Like the previous record, ‘Cherry Flavored Stomach Ache’ was produced with Ariel Rechtshaid, who I just found out today had his first hit with the Plain White T’s ‘Hey There Delilah’. That’s not really relevant to anything going on here, but I find it very amusing.
Anyway, you probably know Rechtshaid better from working with Vampire Weekend, Rostam, Sky Ferreira, and Adele. He’s pretty much secured his place as HAIM’s go-to producer and creative partner at this point, so it’s no surprise to see him contribute once again to HAIM’s new music.
I’m not one to judge too harshly before I’ve seen a movie, but The Last Letter From Your Lover sounds just absolutely awful. Described as “a passionate, dual-narrative love story set in the French Riviera and London during the 1960s and present day,” the trailer makes it seem like complete schlock. How did Felicity Jones get suckered into this turd? Ah well, it’s got a HAIM song on the soundtrack, so it’s not a complete wash.
