The “guilty pleasure” TV show Margot Robbie is obsessed with

An A-list actor and a powerhouse producer she may be, but Margot Robbie has no airs or graces whatsoever over developing an unhealthy obsession with a TV show that doesn’t obviously come across as appointment viewing for awards season heavy hitters and high-powered stars.

With three Academy Award wins to her name in three different categories and a career that’s equally impressive behind the scenes as it is in front of the camera, Robbie has already accomplished more by her mid-30s than she could have possibly dreamed of.

Like multiple generations of Antipodean performers before her, she got her start with an extended stint on a local soap opera, with Robbie playing Donna Freedman in almost 400 episodes of Neighbours. When she made the familiar jump to Hollywood, it didn’t take long until the rocket was strapped to her back.

A star-making performance in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street was followed by two rapid-fire Will Smith collaborations in romantic crime caper Focus and superhero blockbuster Suicide Squad before an Oscar-nominated turn in I, Tonya established her dramatic credentials, while Quentin Tarantino wrote the part of Sharon Tate in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with her specifically in mind.

She produced Emerald Fennell’s Oscar-winning Promising Young Woman, did the same again on her twisted psychological black comedy thriller Saltburn, and lived up to her bluster when Barbie did exactly what she told Warner Bros it was going to be comfortably clearing a billion dollars at the box office.

It doesn’t seem as if Robbie would have a lot of downtime when she’s constantly spinning so many plates at once, but as friend and Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson revealed to Vanity Fair, she’s obsessed with one British reality show so much that she even themed her 31st birthday party around it.

“She really loves Love Island, which is surprising just because she’s very classy,” the scribe said. “But yes, that is definitely a guilty pleasure that we waste many, many hours on.” Not only that, but Robbie even found herself in full fangirl mode when she came face-to-face with several contestants.

Presumably at the request of its star and producer, several Love Island alumni were invited to the red carpet premiere of Barbie, where Robbie surprised the stars of the show by reversing their roles. “I can’t believe I’m meeting you,” she giddily exclaimed to Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, which unsurprisingly took the ex-contestant by surprise when she was attending the launch party of a Hollywood blockbuster fronted by the very person who could barely contain their excitement.

Everyone has a guilty pleasure or two that provides ideal comfort viewing, and rather surprisingly, for Robbie it’s Love Island she always turns to when she’s in need of a pick-me-up.
