Guillermo del Toro says “fuck AI” as human work “shines from every frame” of ‘Frankenstein’

Guillermo del Toro has emphatically stated “fuck AI” as he claimed that the work of human beings “shines from every frame” of his new movie, Frankenstein

The director made the comments during his acceptance speech for the ‘Vanguard Tribute’ prize at the Gotham Awards on December 1st, where he was joined on stage by the film’s lead co-stars, Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac.

As well as obviously honouring the work of the actors who appear in the movie, del Toro was also keen to stress his thanks to the creative departments within the project, who often lack recognition on major stages.

“I’d like to tell the rest of our extraordinary cast and our crew that the artistry of all of them shines on every single frame of this film that was willfully made by humans, for humans,” he said.

The filmmaker paid homage to “The designers, builders, make-up, wardrobe team, cinematographers, composers, editors, this tribute belongs to all of them,” before adding, “I would like to extend our gratitude and say: Fuck AI.”

It comes as an increasing number of prolific directors in Hollywood are continuing to denounce the effects of AI in the film industry, with James Cameron recently hitting out by saying the practice is “horrifying to me”.

Elsewhere in his speech, del Toro also honoured the source material for his film by speaking about the impact Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein has had on him throughout his life.

“I understood that back then, through her work and the first glimpse of Boris Karloff, that I did not belong in the world the way my parents, the way the world expected me to fit,” he explained.

The director added that the story’s “faraway land inhabited only by monsters and misfits” have “been my kin ever since.”

Del Toro said that working with actors such as Elordi and Isaac on Frankenstein has been “truly one of the greatest privileges of my life, and in them, I found another family”.
