Green Day show support for “brothers and sisters in Minnesota” during Kia Forum concert

Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong has expressed support for their “brothers and supporters” in Minnesota, which has been targeted by ICE.

Minnesota has been at the centre of the aggressive anti-immigration policy that is being carried out by Donald Trump’s administration during recent weeks, which saw Renee Nicole Good killed by ICE official Jonathan Ross on January 7th in Minneapolis.

Following Good’s tragic death, anti-ICE protests have continued to break out in Minnesota. On January 18th, protestors gathered inside a church service to chant “ICE out” due to allegations that a pastor is working for ICE.

The US Attorney General Pam Bondi has since said that protestors who interrupted the service will face the “full force of federal law” and an investigation has been launched.

According to the BBC, the Pentagon currently has 1,500 soldiers on standby for possible deployment in Minnesota.

Amid the ongoing situation, Green Day singer Armstrong showed his support for protestors fighting back against ICE in Minnesota when the punk band performed at the Kia Forum in California on January 17th.

In a clip that has since emerged from the show, Armstrong said as Green Day performed ‘Holiday’: “This song is anti-fascism. This song is anti-war. We stand up for our brothers and sisters in Minnesota.”

He also had choice words for the United States Homeland Security Advisor, Stephen Miller, adding, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, Stephen Miller now has the floor.” In the song’s original lyrics, Armstrong sings, “The representative from California has the floor”.

Per Billboard, Armstrong also altered the lyrics of ‘American Idiot’, as he has done many times previously, from “I’m not part of the redneck agenda” to “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda”.

Green Day will have an opportunity to make their voices heard on an international scale when they perform at the opening ceremony of the Super Bowl on February 8th at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Notably, Bad Bunny, another critic of ICE and the Trump administration, will perform the halftime show at the Super Bowl. It remains to be confirmed whether Trump will attend the showpiece event of the NFL season.
